What an NMFC Freight Code Lookup Helps You Do (Cont.)
NMFC Code vs. Freight Class
Many shippers use these terms interchangeably, but they serve different purposes.
The NMFC code identifies the commodity being shipped. The freight class is the rating category assigned based on the characteristics of that commodity. Freight class often reflects density, ease of handling, value, stowability, and liability.
That distinction matters. Two shipments may look similar but still have different NMFC codes or classes depending on how they are packaged, how dense they are, or what risk they present in transit. That is why a simple description of the freight is not always enough.
Why Freight Gets Reclassified
Freight is often reclassified when the original shipment information is incomplete, inaccurate, or too general. This can happen when dimensions are wrong, packaging details are missing, density is miscalculated, or the wrong commodity description is used on the bill of lading.
Common reasons for reclassification include:
- Using a generic product description
- Applying the wrong NMFC code
- Incorrect weight or dimensions
- Missing packaging details
- Shipping freight that does not match the original commodity listing
- Using a guessed class instead of a verified classification
Reclassification can increase shipping costs and create administrative work that slows down operations. A better NMFC freight code lookup process helps reduce that risk.
