Step by Step: Freight Class Calculation

  • Weight: Begin by weighing your freight using a calibrated NTEP-certified floor or forklift scale. Include the weight of the pallet and packaging. Measure in pounds for the density calculation.
  • Measurement: Measure the widest, longest, and highest points of your shipment, including any overhang or protrusions. Standard pallets are typically 48 inches long and 40 inches wide.
  • Density: Calculate the density of your shipment:
  1. Cubic Feet: Multiply length x width x height, then divide by 1,728 (cubic inches per cubic foot). Formula: (L x W x H) / 1728
  2. Calculate Density: Divide shipment weight by cubic feet. Formula: weight / cubic feet = density
  • Assign Your Freight Class: Use the NMFTA class-based grading system, with eighteen classes ranging from 50 to 500. Freight classes are primarily determined by density (weight per cubic foot), but factors like value, stowability, handling, and liability can also impact classification. Refer to an official NMFC code book to confirm the correct freight class.

By following these steps, or by using the freight class calculator above, you can determine your LTL freight class accurately. Consider weight, measurements, and density, and reference the NMFTA classification system for proper assignment.
