Are you Putting all of Your Transportation Eggs in One Basket?

The idiom of “putting all of your eggs in one basket” is used very loosely in today’s society. It was originally coined to talk about investments and meant that you should diversify your portfolio when investing in stocks, bonds, 401k etc. Unless you are very proficient at stocks and are spending a vast majority of your time trading, you are going to let a professional firm manage your 401k investments until you are able to retire. As it pertains to your freight and shipping needs, diversification is the way to go!

Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket

When talking with potential prospects, we often discuss single sourcing a mode of transportation, such as Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), to BlueGrace. Prospects tend to say that they “do not want to put all their eggs in one basket.” When outsourcing your LTL transportation procurement and strategy with a 3PL, the opposite is true.

Utilizing BlueGrace Logistics for LTL is NOT putting all of your eggs in one basket.

By NOT using a 3PL, you may end up doing one or all of the following:
  • Only using one national LTL carrier for 100% of your LTL business
  • Running all of your logistics “in house”
  • Not having the business intelligence to be able to accurately forecast transportation spend and trends
  • Having your customer service or logistics staff quote multiple brokers, auditing freight bills, and doing damage claims
  • Saying “best cost” is your only true KPI
A 3PL can provide you with the following: 
  • Diversification – A 3PL can provide you will a list of carriers and discounted prices that fit your shipping needs.
  • Data – A 3PL will conduct a deep dive into your businesses processes and return with suggestions to better manage your supply chain.
  • Time – A 3PL will free up your employees that usually focus on pricing with carriers, tariffs, procurement strategy and so forth, so they can better support your business.
  • Customer Support – When an issue arises with your freight, a 3PL will make the calls, discover what went wrong, and make suggestions accordingly.

At the end of the day, your 3PL should support you in a way that moves your business forward.  After all, Transportation Management is not your specialty.
